How we run a tile job

We are a small tile crew based in Grand Rapids, and we keep a short list of things we do well. Tile, stone, and the rooms they go in. Here is how we work, what we care about, and why homeowners across Kent County keep our number in their phone.

How we run a tile job

We are a Grand Rapids tile crew, based right here in town. We are not a call center in another state farming out work by the hour. When you reach out, you talk to the people who will be in your house, standing on your floor, cutting on your driveway. That matters more than it sounds. The person who looks at your shower is the person who has to make it work, so nobody is tempted to promise a number that the crew cannot hit. We know the neighborhoods, the housing stock, and the supply houses in town. We know which streets on the West Side make a truck and a wet saw a real puzzle. We plan around all of it before the first day, which is why our start dates tend to hold.

Every job starts with a look. We measure, we check the floor for flex, and we get behind the surface where we can. In a bathroom that usually means pulling a piece of trim or looking under the vanity for old water damage. Then we write the scope down. Not a number scribbled on the back of a card, but a written list of what we will remove, what we will build, and what materials the job needs. If we see something that changes the price later, you hear about it before it happens. Surprises on day four are how homeowners lose trust in a trade, and we would rather have a hard conversation on day one. If your budget and the right way to build it do not line up, we say that too.

Prep is where we spend our time. Anyone can spread mortar and stick tile to a wall. The part that decides whether your shower is fine in ten years happens before the tile shows up. We set the right board for wet areas, seal the seams and the corners, slope the pan properly, and flood test before tile. On floors we look at the span, the joist spacing, and the subfloor thickness, then add what the assembly needs. We follow the setting methods the trade handbooks lay out, not shortcuts picked up on a job site years ago. It is slower. It also means we do not get callbacks on cracked grout lines and loose tile, which is how a small crew stays busy without chasing new work every week.

How we act in your house is part of the job. We cover the path from the door to the room, run dust control on cuts, and get debris out the same day when the schedule allows. Cutting happens outside whenever weather cooperates, and in the winter we set up so the dust and the cold stay out of your living room. We ask about pets, kids, work from home calls, and where we can park, because a wet saw in the wrong spot on a narrow street near Eastown makes a neighbor an enemy fast. At the end of each day the room gets swept and the tools get stacked in one place. You should be able to live in your house while we work in it.

On materials, we help without pushing. Some homeowners walk in knowing the exact tile they want, down to the finish and the edge. Others want to talk through porcelain against natural stone, or ask why one shower floor tile grips better with wet feet than another. We give you the honest tradeoffs. Stone needs sealing and care. Big pieces look clean but demand a flat wall. A busy pattern hides grout haze and a dark grout hides less than people expect. We set what you buy and we tell you up front if a material is going to fight the room. Then we order the right mortar and grout for the tile you chose, because those two decisions are not one size fits all.

Why homeowners stay with us

The short version

We answer the phone. That sounds like a low bar, and in this trade it is not. Homeowners tell us the same story over and over about calls that went nowhere and a bid that never came. When you call us, you get a person or a callback the same day. We show up when we say we will, and if a job runs long or a delivery slips, you hear it from us before you have to ask. We also turn work down. If a bath needs structural work we do not do, or if the honest answer is that a floor should be replaced rather than tiled over, we say that and point you the right way. Saying no to the wrong job is part of doing the right ones well.

Our work gets judged years later, not on the day we leave. Any tile can look sharp on a Friday afternoon with fresh grout and clean glass. The real test comes after two Michigan winters, when the house has expanded and shrunk and a hundred wet towels have hit the floor. That is why we care about movement joints, sealed penetrations at the valve and the spout, a pan that actually drains, and edges that are finished instead of caulked over. Before we call a job done, we walk it with you. Every punch item gets fixed, not argued about. We would rather spend an extra hour with a sponge and a razor than have you look at one bad joint every morning.

Most of our work comes from people who used us once. A homeowner in Grandville who had us do a shower calls back in the fall about a fireplace. A landlord in Wyoming hands us three units a year. Somebody in Rockford gives our number to a neighbor after seeing the mudroom floor hold up to a winter. We like it that way, because it keeps us honest and it keeps us local. There is no version of this where we take a shortcut in your basement bath and still get that call from the house next door. Our name travels through neighborhoods here, from Alger Heights to Ada, and the only thing that protects it is the quality of the last job we finished.
